geek/dork/nerd: Clive-*sigh*-Owen edition

| | comments (2)

In honor of GenXer Clive Owen’s brilliant performance in the must-see Children of Men -- as well as his ascension to Current Boyfriend on my Bias Meter -- here’s the full range of his characters: his cool and clever driver in the short films of the Hire series; his felon with the heart of a gardener in Greenfingers; and his cluelessly deluded writer in Croupier.

geek/dork/nerd: year-in-review edition

| | comments (2)

The year is over and good riddance. Looking back, we see it was the year of Stephen Colbert, geek god for introducing truth to power and truthiness to us all; of dorks waiting on line in the rain for days to buy a video game; and of people who seriously believe in aliens that inhabit our bodies going way off the deep end; see: Tom Cruise’s sad meltdown

geek/dork/nerd: the-spy-who-loved-me edition

The spy who loved me? Don’t I wish! Check out my piece on Film.com about how Daniel Craig really is Generation X’s first James Bond, then my review of the film, which focuses on its geekiness.

Here’s the new Bond, DangerMouse, and Rowan Atkinson’s Johnny English.

geek/dork/nerd: pick-the-new-James-Kirk edition

| | comments (3)

Cinematical is debating the wisdom of recasting Captain James T. Kirk in a Star Trek Babies movie, without naming names. I name names: Heath Ledger, Ryan Phillippe, Jack Black.

geek/dork/nerd: save-the-cheerleader edition

| | comments (2)

Since I think it’s all likely to change before the show ends, here’s how some of the characters of Heroes stand now: Claire, the cheerleader, who seems remarkably okay with her amazing powers; Isaac, the painter, who obviously is having some trouble dealing with his prognosticatory abilities; and Hiro, who’s such a nerd, but a sweet one.

geek/dork/nerd: not-a-journalist-but-plays-one-on-TV edition

| | comments (1)

In honor of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan -- which opens next week and I saw last night and is, oh my god, one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen -- herewith fake journalists: Sacha Baron Cohen, Chevy Chase, and Jeff Gannon.

And speaking of Sacha Baron Cohen, holy crap: when he’s not Borat or Ali G., he’s gorgeous:

geek/dork/nerd: after-the-apocalypse edition

| | comments (2)

Anyone else watching Jericho? I’m finding myself getting hooked in spite of myself, mostly because I have my suspicions about where the show might be going. (I’m gonna write about this soon at my new gig at Film.com, so stay tuned there.) Also, Skeet Ulrich is growing on me, out of sheer regular exposure; he might be the made-for-TV Johnny Depp, but I’ll take ersatz Johnny Depps wherever I can find them. So anyway, herewith dudes of the apocalypse: Stu Redman; Skeet’s Jericho character, whose name I can’t even remember; and Mad Max.

geek/dork/nerd: Battlestar-Galactica-is-back edition

| | comments (7)

Battlestar Galactica returns tomorrow, and now I’m hooked. So, here’s Kara Thrace, Galen Tyrol, and Gaius Baltar. *hiss*

are you a geek, a dork, or a nerd?

| | comments (16)

Kathy A. in comments on this week's GDN points out that there is an online Geek/Dork/Nerd test.

I took it, of course. My results:

Modern, Cool Nerd
69 % Nerd, 56% Geek, 17% Dork

Sounds about right.

geek/dork/nerd: banned-books edition

| | comments (3)

It’s Banned Books Week, that dubious celebration the American Library Association hosts each year in order to scold twits and ninnies who think that by limiting what people read they can keep us all from having sex, or something. From the ALA’s list of the most challenged books of the 21st century, here are Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, and Scary Stories. If you’ve been thinking of buying any of these books, now is the week to do it, and piss off all the bluestockings.

(Thanks to Bonnie-Ann Black for the topic suggestion.)
