Kindle is catching on

| | comments (1)

Are people actually using Kindle, Amazon's e-reader? It seems like they are -- TechCrunch is reporting that 240,000 of the things have been sold so far.

Since I first wrote about the Kindle last year, I've seen one in the flesh, so to speak -- it's way cooler than I ever imagined -- and have heard from friends who've gotten hooked on them, and the general consensus seems to be that the only people complaining about them are those who haven't actually used one. I wouldn't mind the chance to play around with a Kindle on an extended basis... and I think I may need to get my own book into a format that Kindle can read.

Yup, I had commented on your last post about the Sony Reader, which I have. It's the same e-ink technology. I prefer that one to the Kindle, but same concept, same incredibly cool screen. I know everyone I've shown it to has been blown away by it. Sony had a display in Border's, which is what sold me. I had heard about it, thought it seemed cool, but wasn't sold until I saw it there and was able to hold it and see how impressive the e-ink is. Add in Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page) for tons of free, public domain books that you can put on the device, and they had me. I gather that the Kindle store is probably a little nicer than the Sony Connect store, despite my affection for the Reader as a better device. Oh, and there's no Connect software for Macs still, which is dumb. So that'd settle it for you. You could still load books on by copying them to an SD card, but you wouldn't be able to buy new ones on your computer. *sigh* So dumb, Sony. I think once more people see the e-ink up close, and the price starts to come down on these, they'll catch on. I could definitely see them being big in high schools and colleges. How much nicer would be it be to carry around one light, slim ebook reader instead of 3 or 4 big, bulky, heavy textbooks?
