I walked with dinosaurs

Well, I sat high up in an arena and watched them walk. But it was pretty darn cool anyway.

Last night I saw Walking with Dinosaurs: The Live Experience at Madison Square Garden here in New York. It's based on the BBC documentary series, and apparently it's been all over the world, not to mention the U.S. already, but it's still got dates to come in Chicago and Southern California.

Here's a clip of the show in Brisbane last year:

The dinosaurs are very realistic looking, a combination of -- my geeky FX and theater wise pals and I decided -- puppetry, animatronics, and electronics. The T. rex is, as you might expect, absolutely the highlight:

The "host," supposedly a paleontologist, is obviously localized for each country -- ours had an American accent, and made a very bad (and ridiculously outdated) joke about former mayor Rudy Guiliani. (The folks in California will get a bad Arnold Schwarzenegger joke, maybe.) We kept hoping the T. rex would eat him at the show's climax -- especially after he gave us a bit of acting that was downright Shatner-esque -- but that didn't happen.

Bonus! Not only was it all wonderfully rife with all sorts of "propaganda" about evolution and natural selection, there was some environmental/global warming/save-the-planet stuff too! Just think of how the children's minds will be warped toward science and truth and reality and stuff! Awesome!

And the kids all around us did love it -- there's nothing like a four-year-old roaring like a T. rex.
