How big a dork am I? I was planning a trip with a friend, artist and writer Bonnie-Ann Black, to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to see the way-cool King Tut exhibit. We’d settled on a day trip on Saturday, July 21st... but something was nagging me about that date... something I had to do...
Harry Potter! That’s the day Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows will be released! (You’ve preordered your copy, haven’t you?) And I’m committed to doing nothing else that weekend but reading that book. (So we switched Tut to the next weekend.)
Anyway, massive speculation about what will happen in the last book is gripping everyone, geek and nongeek alike. Apparently, an editor from Scholastic, the series’ American publisher, appeared on the Today show this morning to show off the cover for the deluxe edition, with all the clues an illustration from the story can potentially offer. (Is there anything less geeky than the Today show? Sheesh.) Beyond Hogwarts also has a detailed analysis of three different covers -- the standard American, the children’s British, and the adult British -- and many, many comments from readers about what each covers illustrates might reveal about the story itself.
The biggest question probably is: Will Harry Potter die? Librarians think not, a British literature prof thinks not, and -- perhaps most indicative in the nongeeky realm -- London bookies think not.
What do geeks think? While some fan fic predicts a sad ending for Harry, I’m guessing most geeky fans think he’ll survive, and I’m basing that prediction on this: domain names like ripharrypotter.com and harrypotterisdead.com are still available, as are a slew of variations on the idea. In fact, the only related domain name I stumbled upon that is registered is harrypotterisdead.com.
I kinda suspect that the only satisfying resolution to the story will involve Harry’s death. I don’t want Harry to die, of course, but sometimes such things are necessary for a dramatically complete tale.
I guess I’ll know by July 22...
