what a geek dreams

| | comments (13)

How pathetic am I?

I dreamed last night that my desk was clean and neat and orderly.

This is what it really looks like:

I was trying to have pleasant dreams about Richard Armitage, and this is what I get instead.

*sigh*

Tsk, tsk. Looks like it would take about 5 minutes to clean that up. My own desk is kept TOTALLY clean at all times... not even any wires showing on my monitor, speakers, etc. Here's what mine looks like: http://www.clayj.com/claysoffice1.jpg
Pfft. You call that messy? You obviously have no idea what messy really is. Look! You can still see some parts of the desk!
Oops! Just an FYI for Clay and everyone: ya can't post images in comments. (I can't either -- I tried. It's a limitations of Movable Type, I guess.) But you can link to images, so I changed your comment to do that, Clay. Anyway... I'd say that picture of "your" desk, Clay, was something out of a catalog, except that "Sulaco" license plate pretty much proves it is the domain of a geek. Still, I find that kind of cleanliness suspicious. :->
It's funny that you can't post images in comments, because when I previewed the post, the image showed up just fine in the preview. It's most definitely my desk. I hate paper and clutter... even at work, where I have to deal with paper on a daily basis, I keep every single piece of paper in a single stack sorted chronologically. SULACO was my first personalized license plate, back from when I got my first car in '86, when Aliens came out. (I also own a pulse rifle and a motion detector from the movie.) I've had many, many personalized plates since then... here are some of them. See if you can guess where each one is from: RISING (on a red Geo Storm... get it?) IAMNOTA# MNEMONIC OK TO GO ABUVITAL LYTCYCLE (on an Audi TT) AGNTSMTH INEVTABL EVANESCE COALESCE WNTRMUTE (current plate, car #1) NROMANCR (current plate, car #2) How's that for being a geek? Some day I will have this plate... see if you can figure out what it means: 2B+!2B=?
To be or not to be, that is the question. Too easy. =-D
Oh please. I can see in the background that the rest of the room is just fine. My entire HOUSE looks like the top of your desk, plus scattered preschool toys, week-old cheerios ground into the floor, and marbles seemingly strategically placed for maximum slapstick-like falling on my ass. By the way I frakkin' LOVE your couch and pillows.

The rest of the place is not TOO bad. Clutter is my problem, not general slovenliness, and that's the clutter that comes from having your office in your home.

Ugh. I hate the couches -- I've got two of them, which I got for 50 bucks each at a garage sale. They're usually covered with red blankets (acting as slipcovers), but Cassie the cat rolfed on one, and the other was covered with cat hair, and they've been waiting to get laundered for ages now. The pillows are cool, though. Perhaps I'll post closeup pix of those someday...
RISING (on a red Geo Storm... get it?)
Red Storm Rising. Clancy freak, huh? :->
IAMNOTA#
I am not a number. Prisoner!
MNEMONIC
Not Johnny Mnemonic?
OK TO GO ABUVITAL LYTCYCLE (on an Audi TT)
No clue.
AGNTSMTH
Duh: Agent Smith, "humans are a cancer"...
INEVTABL EVANESCE COALESCE WNTRMUTE (current plate, car #1)
No clue.
NROMANCR (current plate, car #2)
Neuromancer!
Yep, Clancy freak... at least as far as the Ryanverse goes (plus Red Storm Rising). The only person who ever "got" that plate without me having to explain it was some dude on a Harley who got me to roll down my window at a traffic light and said "Clancy fan, huh?" (Almost exactly the same thing you just said. Not that I equate you with guys on Harleys.) MNEMONIC is from Johnny Mnemonic. Yeah, I know. So full of promise, such a disappointment. OK TO GO is Jodie Foster's repeated line from Contact. ABUVITAL isn't from a movie, but it would make a great name for a drug... "above it all", kinda like Robin Williams' fictional drug "fuckital". LYTCYCLE is a reference to the lightcycles in TRON... the Audi TT looks a lot like a lightcycle from the side. INEVTABL is what Agent Smith says constantly... "It is inevitable." WNTRMUTE is Wintermute, the opposing Tessier-Ashpool AI in Neuromancer who's trying to join with Neuromancer to create the super-AI. Since I have two cars, I like to keep the plates in opposition to each other somehow. The other candidates this past change, and which might get used next time, were DARKNRGY and DARKMTTR. Best plate ever: NY plate "3M TA3". (Think about it.) Now I would like to see your desk cleaned up, young lady. (I can say "young lady" because I am older than you are. :-) )
And here I thought I was a hardcore geek because I could guess why a female acquaintance used the pen name of Samantha Carter. (No, it wasn't because of "Stargate." Guess again and bear in mind she was a sci-fi fan.)
Mulder's sister? (I don't expect this is a Bewitched reference.) Not sure where Carter comes from, but off the top of my head I am thinking of Edgar Rice Burroughs' early SF character John Carter of Mars. I may be a bigger geek than MaryAnn. ;-) (Note the use of the word "may".)
You got half of it right, Clay. Samantha was a reference to Mulder's sister; Carter was a reference to Mulder's creator Chris Carter.
> Best plate ever: NY plate "3M TA3". (Think about it.) That's pretty good. :o) I've seen a similarly-styled plate here in Perth (Western Australia) that is "TIHZ HO"
