breaking news: Anna Nicole Smith still dead

| | comments (8)

Are they kidding? Seriously. Are. They. Fucking. Kidding? Top story of the night:

I mean, Christ, we’re doomed, aren’t we? And I’m not even sure I care anymore. Sure, condolences to the handful of people -- comparatively speaking, when weighed against the 300 million people in the U.S. alone -- who actually cared for this woman. But come on. The major networks are devoting all their efforts at the moment to covering the demise of a bimbo whose great claims to fame were that she took her clothes off for a magazine and fucked a guy more than three times her age. How is this news again?

Meanwhile:

BAGHDAD, Iraq --A U.S. airstrike Thursday killed 13 insurgents in a volatile area west of Baghdad, the military said. Local officials said 45 civilians, including women and children, died in the attack.

WASHINGTON - Four of the world's top physical scientists told Congress on Thursday that there's little doubt the world is getting warmer because of mankind's influences. They painted a dire portrait of rising sea levels, worsening storms and widespread droughts, which they said could result if humanity doesn't change its ways.

An influential lawmaker says the United States and its international partners need to plan for possible deployment of a peacekeeping force to protect civilians in Darfur, without the permission of Sudan's government, if diplomacy fails.

But everything’s fine. It’s fine. Nothing of import is going on in the world today, so even though we are a nation of children who cannot utter the word vagina without trembling, we can afford to spend valuable network broadcast and cablecast hour in slavish devotion to a woman who did nothing but use her hoohah as a moneymaker.

This is the best we deserve. We’re doomed.

We have always been, I hate to admit it, a tabloid nation, distracted by the scandalous and intrigued by the glamor. Look back as far as Alexander Hamilton's extramarital affair during the Washington administration... which kept attention away from the massive speculation going on inside his Treasury office. Look back to the 1920s, when we had glamor mags and movie star scandalsheets distracting us from the growing economic inequities leading up to the Depression. Yes, there is a war on, and there is massive government corruption, and CEO greed, and the ignorance of our leadership with regards to global warming and stem cell research, and... and... well, heck, did you just see the news about Brad and Angelina and Jen? Hooo boy. Wait, was I just distracted again...?
Also: astronaut in diapers! Bah. I hate us sometimes. Like now.
So I get to work this afternoon and walking past the TV in the break room I see something about Anna Nicole Smith collapsing or something. I put my lunch in the fridge and am once again glad that I bring a book to read on breaks. Out in the hall, someone asks if I heard that she was dead, I queried her actually being dead, he confirmed and my first thought was, "Who fsking cares?", followed closely by, "Oh gods, they are going to be talking about this for weeks"
"Boss, the death of Baby Diego has affected me more than I thought, so I'd like to finish my work at home today." Or words to that effect. Now if only we, as a nation, had Michael Caine to go visit out in the woods and would smoke some Strawberry Cough to put things into perspective. (1/2 smiley)
Being upset about the death of Baby Diego makes a helluva lot more sense than being upset about the death of Anna Nicole Smith. I mean, the last hope of humanity versus a no-talent bimbo who contributed absolute nothing to the human race? It's no contest. Hell, Baby Diego is fictional, and his death is still more upsetting.
An uproar now (and probably for a couple of weeks), then silence. Unlike Elvis or Marilyn, who had enough talent to buoy up their posthumous mystiques, Anna Nicole will pass into oblivion. Probably not as quickly as Gerald Ford, though ("why is that flag still at half-staff? Oh, yeah, him. (Who?)").
Just recently, last year sometime I think, I got tired of complaining about this sort of thing. Every now and then I still go on a rant. Mostly I just feel bemused and tired of getting upset about it. And also, I actually understand the media reaction to this surprise death much better than I do the previous and recent obsession with her life. Anyway,I've started trying not to look, even one second, at the headlines on the mags at the grocery check out. I'm trying not to give them even that much attention and to avoid as much garbage in my brain files as possible. The thing is, how could media have gotten this warped if it didn't get rewarded with money/readers/ratings? I am reminded of Idiocracy, which I have not watched but is in my Netflix cue. Life is strange. And getting stranger.
Great minds think alike? I said the same thing about Zarqawi: http://www.robertsharp.co.uk/2006/06/09/zarqawi-still-dead/
