geek/dork/nerd: all-pirates-these-days edition

| | comments (7)

In honor of the return of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, herewith pirates: Errol Flynn in Captain Blood, which anyone who loves POTC must see; Alan Tudyk’s Steve the Pirate from Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story; and Captain Morgan, rum mascot.

As much as I love Errol Flynn, I gotta give "Classic Pirate Movie King" props to Burt Lancaster in The Crimson Pirate. Between all the great stunt work, the wonderful Technocolor camera shots, and Burt Lancaster's bare chest (my first Classic Hollywood crush at the age of 13), it's a feast for the senses. (Also, it has the original version of two guys crossing the bottom of the ocean under a turned-up rowboat, as seen in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.)
Okay, could you explain the geek/dork/nerd thing again? Because I have a feeling you must be hating on a pirate somewhere here, and it BETTER not be my man Captain Morgan. Alan Tudyk's pretty righteous too. But Captain Morgan in hot apple cider is gonna take him DOWN. Fool. Better ... represent ... or something. Arrrr.
It's not about playa-hating... it's about the playas' attitudes toward themselves. Do they take themselves too seriously? See my original explanation here: http://flickfilosopher.com/geekphilosophy/2005/06/geek_dork_or_ne.html
OK, I'm a lot late here, I admit. But there is no way Steve the Pirate isn't a nerd. He practically defines it, being crucially unaware of how hugely nerdy he is.
Oh, I seem to remember a moment or two when Steve the Pirate acknowledged what a weirdo he was. Granted, it may only have come in Alan Tudyk's performance, which was much more sly and self-aware than is typically demanded of idiotic movies like *Dodgeball,* but it was there nevertheless.
Now I'm going to need to watch Dodgeball again. Thanks a LOT, MaryAnn!
Not that I would recommend *Dodgeball* to anyone with a triple-digit IQ, but Alan Tudyk is pretty much worth seeing in anything -- he's that good.

question of the weekend: If you could travel either in space or in time, which would you choose, and why?

It seems to me that the decision is about exploring the known (if unfamiliar to you) or the unknown: who knows what could be out in space? It could be really lonely out there, and a long way between scenic spots.  | answer it »
