good geek news (‘Futurama’), bad geek news (Jump the Shark)

Good news, everyone!:

Today, Comedy Central announced that Matt Groening’s other cartoon, ‘Futurama’ will return to television in 2008 with a minimum of 13 new episodes.

I’ve been deeply missing Futurama, and can’t wait for some new episodes.

And the bad news? JumpTheShark.com has jumped the shark: one of the coolest and geekiest TV sites is now owned by TV Guide’s parent corp, Gemstar. Oh, the inanity:

As part of the Gemstar deal, Jon Hein, founder of Jump the Shark Inc., will show up on TVGuide.com, TV Guide magazine and the TV Guide Channel.

"We believe Jump the Shark will be a valuable addition to our repertoire of entertainment content," Gemstar-TV Guide Senior VP Sanjay Reddy said in a statement. Hein did him one better with: "Gemstar-TV Guide was a natural fit for Jump the Shark and I'm excited to expand and enhance the brand with the leader on all things television."

I hope Hein got a good price for his soul.

Woohoo! More Futurama. It will be interesting to see how the story revives itself seeing as the last few episodes were written knowing the show was going to be cancelled...
Well, I'm eager for more 'Futurama' but that Jump the Shark deal makes me feel dirty just reading about it.
The real question is, who can we now trust to tell us when the new *Futurama* jumps the shark?
Bleah. Need shower.
We can only hope that Jon Stewart's vision of what a media conglomerate could do to promote things it liked: "MSNBC, for example, gets 400,000 viewers. That's not nearly enough to pay for its content. But in this case, the parent company said, 'Oh, we'll promote this because we like it, and we'll make a deathray and make money with that.' " So if they continue making enough profit with their other divisions they might have enough soul left to leave Jump The Shark well enough alone.
