Cool stuff roundup: movies, magazines, more

|

I collect links to intriguing geeky sites, hoping for a chance to write more about them than “Hey, look at this cool site!” But that opportunity does not always present itself. So here’s a peek into those bookmarks, just to put 'em to some damn use:

Escapist

The Escapist is pretty much the most beautiful online magazine I’ve ever seen... and it’s also the most intriguing site about the geeky subculture of gamers I’ve come across yet. Check out this month’s article about how Wal-Mart decides what games you get to play.

HowStuffWorks offers a look at How the One Man Star Wars Trilogy Works. (I’ve yakked a lot about OMSW previously...)

It’s old, but how can a blog called Geek Philosophy not reference Lore Sjöberg’s classic Geek Hierarchy, at the now defunct (but still online) Brunching Shuttlecocks? Check out Version 2.0 Unabridged.

Fast Forward is a local Washington, DC-area cable TV show dedicated to reporting on the goings-on of SF fandom and talking to notable pros in the field. Some of the episodes are available online, including this month’s interview with legendary editor Ellen Datlow.

The Movie Timeline is the supremely geeky effort by Paul Kerena to document the history of everything ever, as seen in the movies. He explains thusly:

Who'd have thought that while Gangs of New York's Amsterdam Vallon was killing Butcher Bill, down the road Abraham Lincoln was being kidnapped by Bill & Ted...

And lucky Al Capone - he was sent to Alcatraz by Eliot Ness just in time to miss King Kong rampaging around New York...

Andy Dufresne was wrongly sentenced to Shawshank a few short months before someone else was framed - Roger Rabbit...

More neat-o movie stuff: Stomp Tokyo’s Cult Movie Podcast. ST’s Chris says:

Ever have one of those conversations about movies that you wish you could have recorded and shared with someone else? I have -- hundreds of them, in fact, most of them with my partner in crime at Stomp Tokyo, Scott Hamilton.

Now each week I have a conversation with Scott and another friend, record it, and put it up on the web as the Cult Movies Podcast. We talk about sci-fi and cult movie news, legends, and just plain weird stuff, and now you can listen to us be big old movie geeks. We interview filmmakers and other film geeks, too.

Send me links to geeks doing interesting things online when you stumble across stuff. I’ll post ‘em.
