Geek of the Week: Cory Doctorow

| | comments (1)

Because his first novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, blew my mind the way science fiction used to, back when I was a kid and it was all fresh and new.

Because the alternate economy he created for Down and Out -- based on reputation and represented by a “currency” called Whuffie -- goddamn might actually work.

Because he’s one of the original bloggers, and his blog Craphound.com offers more than just regular updates of Cory’s doings -- it’s a peek into the futuristic info-society Cory’s already living in, and a plea for the rest of us to catch up to him already.

Because you can download a copy of Down and Out for free at Craphound. (I bought a dead-trees version, cuz I do most of my reading on the subway and I don’t have a PDA.)

Because his next book, Eastern Standard Tribe, which I’m halfway through, is blowing my mind in all different ways than Down and Out did.

Because he seems to be everywhere online: That make-your-own-candy-hearts thing I linked to earlier today? There’s a little note on the bottom of that page that reads: “Thanks to Cory Doctorow for image editing help.” Weird.

(I’m stunned and delighted to see that I’ll be on a panel with Cory at Boskone this weekend -- we’re gonna talk about blogging. I can’t wait to meet him.)

Whoa.... I haven't read Down and Out, but I'd like to point out that a post-scarcity economy based on a currency of reputation was a prominent part of James Hogan's book Voyage From Yesteryear, (c) 1982...
