Ringing in the new year

| | comments (4)

Onering

I guess two years makes a tradition, right? Once again, as we did last year, I and an extremely select group of geeky pals will spend New Year’s Eve watching the entire Extended Edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. We’ll stop only to watch the ball drop in Times Square at midnight... and since it’s now past noon and we haven’t started yet, we’ll be up until the wee hours of New Year’s Day before Sam marries Rosie.

And if you think that’s geeky, there’s a guy who’s clearly spent a whole lotta time researching the sex lives of elves in Middle Earth, and he doesn’t even appear to have been motivated by an unhealthy attraction to Orlando Bloom in a blond wig and blue contact lenses. Though he does note, quite amusingly:

Ever since the movie of the book Fellowship of the Ring came out, there seem to be two popular ideas about Elves' sex lives. Either they are radiantly asexual, or they are all screwing each other madly, along with any dwarves, hobbits, and men who happen along. Whichever you prefer is usually based on how attractive you think Orlando Bloom is.

His essay What Tolkien Officially Said About Elf Sex is informative and cheeky, and he’s also got a much more scholarly look at elvish naughtiness called Warm Beds Are Good.

Enjoy, and Ná alya i vinya loa! (That’s Elvish for “May the new year be blessed.” Found that at Some Useful Elvish Words and Phrases.)

After FotR first was released, I got into a discussion online about the potential sexual skills of the LotR men (book version). IMO: Aragorn: Total SNAG--lots of foreplay, music wafting up through the open balcony doors from the courtyard below, rose petals scattered all over the bed. Faramir: SNAG with a heavy dose of angst tossed in. He'd have to discuss all of his issues with his bedmate before getting it on, and I doubt very much he'd ever be so uncouth as to bed a camp follower or castle servant. Boromir: Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. Denethor: In his youth, probably more like Boromir, while married he might have had a liaison or two on the side, and after being widowed (and before getting distracted by a certain palantir), wouldn't have any problems dallying with a scullery maid or two. Theoden: Faithful to his wife while she lived, afterwards (before getting distracted by a weaselly counselor) he had a few discreet relationships with court ladies (widows all--he wouldn't mess with a married woman). Eomer: My biggest book-character crush ever. He had the potential of being Boromir-like if not for his sister, through whom he grew to appreciate women. He might not be so prone to romance beforehand, but he'd leave a woman happy when he left her bed in the morning. Sad thing is that I'm a big enough geek to have thought this topic through!
You're not the only one, Kathy A. Eurotrash has a less complimentary assessment at http://tinylink.com/?zMDlOqU8Ku, there's a panel discussion at Tart City (http://www.tartcity.com/lotr_motm.html ), and then there are the very funny, slighly slashy LOTR secret diaries at http://homepages.nyu.edu/~amw243/diaries/ and http://www.livejournal.com/users/cassieclaire/
So absolutely jealous that you have enough geeky friends to spend New Year's watching LOTR with. Most of mine still don't get it (though not for a sincere lack of trying on my part), and my husband doesn't have the attention span to sit still for that long.
Kim, are you in NYC? We'll have our OWN party next year.
